Spices are Medicine

In ancient India times, during the days of the medicine man, the medicine man would often prescribe a concoction of carefully selected spices and herbs as medicines for a variety of ailments from digestive problems, to dental and gum problems to inflammations and other aches and pains. Today, in our modern scientific age, scientist are busy extracting refined elements from these same spices and herbs(in addition to plants from other regions in the world). Most of the ancient Indian medicine man knowlege is lost to the sands of time but the foods and recipes remain.


Garam Masala Spice Mix

Many of our recipes begins with the base of freshly ground mix of spices. Garam translates to hot which in the name Garama Masala refers to the heat flavour energy extracted from the mix of freshly grinding mace(javitri) and nutmet, black peppercorns, cinnamon, cloves, and cardomon. Masala translates to variety or more specifically mixture in this case. All the mentioned spices that make up a Garam Masala Spice Mix are great for your health.

Mace & Nutmeg is highly beneficial to your health. The beneficial components include dietary fiber, manganese, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, magnesium, copper, and macelignan.

Cloves are known for their potent medicinal properties. Cloves contain fiber, vitamins and minerals. Recent studies in animals have found that cloves contain important nutrients, are high in antioxidants, help strengthen bone density, reduce stomache ulcers, regulate blood sugar, improve liver health, and may even protect against cancer.


Too much sugar and salt

The recipes of most of our favourite food choices use heavy salt and sugar which makes those foods taste great. But excess salt can lead to high blood pressure and excess sugar to diabetes. If you have concerns about your health then you need to restrict your salt and sugar intake. But you do not need to restrict yourself to a bland diet. Indian recipes are a great alternative food choice because instead of packing in flavour with heavy portions salt and sugar, foods are flavoured using a wide variety of spices.

These spices not only substitute to provide flavour in place of heavy salt and sugar, but they also provide health benefits, each on their own.
